Te Whara Track

This track been included as one of the Top 5 Great Day Walks by Department of Conservation (DOC) and Tourism New Zealand. 

The most challenging walk in the area but also the most rewarding.  Following a historic Maori trail through heritage coastal forest, Te Whara track links Urquharts Bay with Ocean Beach. A challenging start sees you climb to the summit of Mt Lion (395m) via wooden steps.  Then an undulating track makes its way along the ridge towards Bream Head (476m).

The track passes the ruins of a WWII Naval Radar Station, then opens out into grassland for an easy walk down to Ocean Beach with expansive views of the coast

With amazing views, some of the best coastal forest in the North Island and beautiful bird life, this track deserve its Top 5 placing.

Time:  4-5 hours

Toilets at beginning and end of track

*** This is a one-way track, however you can walk back along the road to your vehicle. It is approx. 5km and takes around an hour ***
